Research interests
The research in our laboratory is oriented towards three major subjects:
- The study of ER-mediated apoptosis.
- The study of the molecular mechanisms involved in cellular ageing.
- The study by molecular genetic approaches of the cellular mechanisms involved in the formation and propagation of prions.
In our investigation of these cellular mechanisms, we utilize the powerful approaches of yeast genetics combined with post-genomic methods as well as biochemical and molecular biology techniques.
As experimental model, we use Schizosaccharomyces pombe, because this fission yeast exhibits striking similarities with mammalian cells in terms of protein folding and other basic cellular mechanisms. Therefore, the outcome of our research can eventually be extrapolated to our understanding of these processes in human cells.
