Course description
Identity is at the heart of individual and collective well-being. An ill-defined social identity makes people suffer from problems such as depression, anxiety, lack of motivation or dropout from schools (Taylor, 1997, 2002). The Identities and social interactions course aims to expose students to the most influential theories in social psychology dealing with personal and social identities. Theories related to social and personal identities will be exposed, discussed and criticized. Mainly, theories of intergroup relations will be put forward in various social contexts such as social change and multicultural societies. Relations between minority and majority groups will be explored in terms of the theory of real conflict, the theory of relative deprivation and social identity theory. Part of the course will be devoted to the adaptation of identity due to social change.
